Share

Encinitas is a classic Southern California beach town.  The area north from Swami’s Beach to D Street is a fairly isolated section referred to as Boneyards Beach.  This is a prime scenic surfing spot backed by cliffs.

  • Beach Type: Beach backed by bluffs
  • Access:  Walk down stairs at D Street in the north or Swami’s in the south
  • Parking: Free street parking
  • Facilities: None, full restrooms at Moonlight Beach to north
  • Good For: Laying out in the Sun, scenery, swimming, surfing
  • Not Good For: Ease of access

Boneyard Beach Boneyard Beach

Boneyards Beach runs less than a mile south of Moonlight State Beach in the center of Encinitas.  This area can be accessed from the staircase at D Street.  You can also walk here from Moonlight State Beach in the north or Swami’s in the south.

This area is a lot like Del Mar South Beach or the area of Solana Beach north of Fletcher Cove (Tide Beach Park).  It is an isolated area backed by cliffs that rise above the beach.

The beach area is fairly wide, but during really high tides, the water can reach to the bluffs.

Parking is along the streets of Encinitas.  At D Street, there is a staircase down to the beach.  This has a nice observation platform complete with benches.  From D Street it is a short walk up to the popular Moonlight State Beach which has restrooms and a seasonal concession stand.

Boneyard Beach

If you go further south from D Street, Boneyards Beach becomes more isolated.  This area is mainly for surfers.  However, it is also a nice place to do a hike or jog.

The surf here is not too rough, but lifeguard facilities are limited.  This is really not the best place to take children swimming.

On the streets above the beach is a neat little side attraction, the Encinitas Boathouses.  These houses were built by architect Miles Kellogg in the late 1920s.  They are shaped by boats, but they are actually houses of around 1100 square feet.  The Encinitas Historical Society offers guided tours.
