San Diego’s Best Burgers: Rocky’s Crown Pub in Pacific Beach
On almost any respectable list of best hamburgers in San Diego, Rocky’s will be near the top. They deserve to be as they make a great burger. In Fun Diego Family’s quest for the best burgers in San Diego this is our review of Rocky’s Crown Pub in Pacific Beach.
We don’t get to Rocky’s as much as we would like. Mainly this is because Rocky’s is a bar where no one under 21 is allowed. Hence the pub in Rocky’s Crown Pub. However, the web site is rockyburgers.com and that burgers are what make this place special.

Rocky’s Crown Pub was founded in 1977 along Ingraham St in the Crown Point area of Pacific Beach. The only food they serve is burgers and fries. This is a cash only place. Prices have definitely gone up in recent years so bring lots of money.
There are two burger sizes at Rocky’s Crown Pub, 1/3 pound and a half pound. The 1/3 pound is $6.75, the ½ pound is $7.75. Cheese is an extra quarter. Fries are $4.
A big attraction at Rocky’s Crown Pub is the lunch special where you get a 1/3 pound cheeseburger, fries and a pint of beer for $14.75. This special is good from 11 to 2. I remember just a short time ago this special was only $10. However, with the high price of San Diego craft beer, that is just the way things go.
During lunch time, Rocky’s Crown Pub can get packed. The crowd tends towards an older group of 50+. I have actually only gone here for lunch so I can not say what the nighttime crowd is like. This is a very small place with a few tables and seating at the bar.
Burgers are cooked to order so it can take a while. These are the basic deal, lettuce, tomato and onion (I always get no mayo). They will set condiments by your side including a jar of the pickled yellow cascabella peppers popular at In-N-Out.
According to a 2009 review of Rocky’s Crown Pub in Serious Eats, the meat comes in 10-pound blocks from Jensen’s Meat. This is the same place that supplies Slater’s 50/50, another one of our favorite hamburger places.
Most of the complaints about the burger at Rocky’s Crown Pub revolve around the fact that it is too old school in an age of fancy burgers. To me that is what I love. It is a simple place for a rare burger and a beer lunch (at $4 I am skipping the fries from now on).
With its age restriction and dive bar atmosphere, Rocky’s Crown Pub is definitely not a Fun Diego Family regular. However, I tease my kids that they are really missing out on a great burger until they turn 21.
