Best Potato Masher

A potato masher is a tool that I took for granted for years.  About 10 years ago we lost our trusty potato masher and went on a long search for a replacement.  We bought many potato mashers until we settled on what we believe to be the best potato masher on the market.

Our long running potato masher was what is called a waffle shape potato masher.  Basically, this is a round plate with holes attached to a handle.  As the potato is mashed they come out through the holes looking like a waffle.

When we were in the market to buy a new potato masher, we found that they now come in all kinds of crazy shapes and sizes.  It was actually hard to find a traditional waffle shape potato masher.  Evidently potato mashing technology had advanced.

However, when we tried buying some of these new potato mashers we were incredibly disappointed.  We went through several styles and even tried a potato ricer.  All were duds in our book.  The potato ricer made the potatoes too smooth and fluffy.  Some people prefer that but not our family.

We were able to find some cheap waffle shape potato mashers, but they were flimsy and did not got the job done.  So, we decided to splurge and pay over $30 for a Rosle potato masher.

Rosle is a German company that makes a can opener and a garlic press that we love.  Based on experience, we were comfortable spending the money on their potato masher.  We actually could have saved a lot of time and money if we had taken this plunge in the first place.

The Rosle is a hefty piece of equipment and it gets the job done.  If we lost our Rosle potao masher we would buy it again.  That is always my criteria for selecting a product.

Best Potato Masher

Since we bought our Rosle it appears waffle shape potato masher have come back in vogue.  There is now a larger selection and if you don’t want to pay the big bucks for Rosle there may be some reasonable options.

There is also the option of a potato ricer if you like your mashed potatoes more smooth and fluffly than we do.  That is simply not our style, but we realize this is what many like.

Other waffle shape potato masher that good get reviews include

Zyliss Potato Masher: Good reviews at half the price

Jamie Oliver Potato Masher: Also good reviews at half the price

Best Manufacturers Waffle Head Potato Masher: Solid reviews but almost as much as Rosle

Of course, we have not tried any of these potato mashers and the Rosle is our firm choice.  However, we definitely would stick with a waffle shape potato masher.  Family and friends rave about our mashed potatoes.  Check out our recipe for Ultimate Mashed Potatoes.
