Technivorm Coffee Maker Review

We love coffee, but it seemed it was never as good at home.  For years we had regularly gone through coffee makers, always being disappointed.  Supporting a daily Starbucks habit gets expensive so finally we splurged and bought a Technivorm.  After more than a decade we are more than happy.  This is our Technivorm Coffee Maker Review.

Technivorm is a Dutch company that has been making coffee makers since 1968.  We bought our Technivorm in 2008 after a rave review from Cook’s Illustrated.  Of the home coffee makers they tested it was the only one that gave great coffee.  It does this by quickly bringing the water temperature to the proper range.

After 10 years this still runs like a champ

The key to good coffee (according to Cook’s Illustrated) is cycle time and brewing temperature.  Water needs to be run over the coffee beans at 195 to 205 degrees for 2 to 8 minutes.  The Technivorm has highly conductive copper that quickly heats the water and the cycle runs for about 6 minutes.

The obvious downside is that the Technivorm coffee maker is expensive at over $300.  However, when you consider the price of Starbucks this is not such a bad deal.  After a decade, our Technivorm has more than paid for itself.

There are now several models of Technivorm coffee makers.  We bought the original that comes with a stainless steel carafe.  This has a tight seal that keeps the coffee hot for several hours.  There are other models with a glass carafe.  After breaking several glass carafes over the years we are happy with our stainless steel version.

The Technivorm coffee maker is a very simple machine.  There are no advanced programming features.  Of course, that is a downside for people that like to program their coffee machine the night before.  With the Technivorm you simply add the filter, coffee beans and water and flip the switch.

There is a pause flap on the coffee filter but that is about it for bells and whistles

Cleaning is easy and we have not had a problem with the coffee maker building up deposits.  Every few months we use a descaler which simply runs through a cycle and cleans any mineral deposits.

Of course, $320 is a lot to spend on a coffee maker.  In our mind it was definitely a good investment.  We note that Technivorm also makes a one cup model (10 ounces versus the standard 40 ounces).  However, even that model is over $200.

Fun Diego Family does regular reviews of products we like.  We only review products that we have used AND recommend.  If we don’t like a product we don’t review it.  In other words, you will only find positive reviews.  In summary of our Technivorm Coffee Maker Review if you are a coffee enthusiast this is a must buy!
