Cole Cooks: Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce
This summer I am learning to cook on out outdoor grill. I wanted to make barbecue chicken with a sauce so I learned how to make this Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce.
Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 large lemons
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 2 thin slices onion
- 3 cups Dr Pepper
- 1.5 cups ketchup
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- 1/3 cup Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons orange juice
- 2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 2 tablespoon cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoon hot sauce
- 2 teaspoon liquid smoke
- 2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
Instructions
- Cut lemons in half and remove a ¼ inch slice from each lemon. Place slices in a pan. Juice the remaining lemons in the saucepan.
- Add remaining ingredients and stir. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and let simmer about 20 minutes until thick. Taste for seasoning and adjust.
- Put sauce through strainer and store in jars. Refrigerate.
This Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce comes from the book BBQ USA. I am using this book to help find recipes I can make on our grill. I used this sauce to go with Barbecued Chicken.
My favorite restaurant in San Diego is Phil’s BBQ. I have tried many of their items but when I was a kid I would always get the chick-less tickler. This is chicken tenders coated with Phil’s BBQ sauce. I wanted to try and make a version of this at home. I decided to do a version with Dr Pepper BBQ Sauce.
This sauce is easy to make. I made a large batch to have leftovers. With my dad’s advice I changed the recipe. The sauce was a little too tart so I added more Dr Pepper and brown sugar. I also added some orange juice.
This goes great on chicken but will also work on other food.
