San Diego Beaches: Coronado Dog Beach

Share

Coronado is a small town directly across the harbor from downtown San Diego.  It is almost completely surrounded by ocean.  The Pacific Ocean is on one side and the San Diego Bay is on the other.  This makes it a beach lover’s paradise.  This is our look at Coronado Dog Beach.  This is part of one of the best family beach areas in the country.

  • Location: north end of Ocean Blvd in Coronado
  • Beach Type: Classic wide sandy beach
  • Access:  Directly from the street across a wide sand area
  • Parking: Free street parking
  • Facilities: Restroom and shower area
  • Good For: Laying out in the Sun, scenery, swimming, surfing, family day at the beach, dogs
  • Not Good For: Limited concessions

Coronado is pretty much an island, except for the small strip of land that connects the city to Imperial Beach 10 miles to the south.  Most people come to Coronado by crossing the iconic San Diego-Coronado bridge which was built in 1967.  There is also a ferry directly connecting downtown San Diego to Coronado.

The ocean facing part of Coronado stretches for about a mile and a half along Ocean Blvd from the Hotel Del Coronado to the north area at Coronado Dog Beach.  Coronado Dog Beach is just like the rest of Coronado beach with the exception that dogs are allowed to run free without a leash.

The Coronado beach area is consistently ranked as one of the best in the entire United States.  For example, Dr. Beach’s annual ranking had Coronado as number 9 for 2019.

Coronado Dog Beach is just an extension of the main beach starting at the corner of Ocean Blvd and Ocean Ct.  The beach is located right where the town fo Coronado ends at the Naval Air Station North Island.

Across the street from the beach is Sunset Park.  Sunset Park is a large grass area that is also great for dogs.  It also has a playground for children.

Coronado Dog Beach

Like most of Coronado, Coronado Dog Beach features a long stretch of sand between the road and the ocean.  However, usually, there is a padded footpath leading out to the beach.

There is a wonderful view of Point Loma and the Hotel del Coronado to the south.  In addition, this is outside the commercial district of Coronado so there is usually more street parking.  On the downside, the shops and restaurants of Coronado Village, the Hotel del and the Coronado Ferry Landing are about a mile away.

Overall Coronado Dog Beach is probably the best dog beach in San Diego because of the scenery and convenience.  The other major contenders would be Ocean Beach’s Dog Beach near the airport and Del Mar’s North Beach.  These are great beaches in their own right, but Coronado is simply one of the best in the country.
