JV’s looks like a dive from the outside. The tiny strip mall in which it is located has almost no parking. Most of the time we find free parking on the nearby streets.
Inside JV’s Mexican Food is actually quite large. There are plenty of tables and it is a step above your normal taco shop. However, your attention is likely to be focused primarily on the overwhelming menu. The menu and specials are actually pasted all around the front counter. It can be overwhelming.
At JV’s Mexican Food it is all about the huge menu and massive servings (or vice versa). Of course, the downside to having a huge menu is that quality often suffers. We admit that we have tended to stick to the basics at JV’s.
The burritos at JV’s are massive. These can easily feed two people. Prices are extremely reasonable. If we are taking people to Old Town we will often go down the street to JV’s versus eating at one of the overpriced tourist restaurants.
In terms of crazy items, JV’s Mexican Food has corned beef burritos, salmon tacos, rolled fish taquitos, tune melt quesadilla, Hawaiian burritos…the list goes on. They even have a Chicken Philly burrito.
JV’s Mexican Food is also known for excellent soups and its breakfast burritos. We have only tried the chicken tortilla soup and in general have barely made a dent in the menu.
The food at JV’s Mexican Food is solid for a neighborhood Mexican restaurant in San Diego. Many of these places run together and are hard to distinguish. JV’s definitely stands out for its low price and crazy number of options.
For tourists, JV’s Mexican Food is worth a visit if you want to try the type of Mexican food that San Diego locals eat on a regular basis. It does not have the flair of the tourist places in Old Town, but it is a unique experience in its own right.
