San Diego Comic-Con Museum
San Diego is home to the huge Comic-Con Convention every July. This makes the city ground central for all things comic book related. This makes it a perfect place to locate the upcoming Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park. Fun Diego Family plans to closely follow the development of the San Diego Comic-Con Museum.

Balboa Park is one of San Diego’s premiere attraction. The park is over 100 years old and is home to the famous San Diego Zoo. It is also home to many museums, in some cases housed in historic buildings. The Comic-Con Museum will be located in the Federal Building from 1935.
Until 2017, the Federal Building was home to the San Diego Hall of Champions sports museum. The focus of this huge museum was on San Diego sports. Unfortunately, the cost of occupying this large, older building was too much.
The problem with the Hall of Champions was it has a local sports focus. Many of the exhibits have now moved to an exhibit at Petco Park.
Of course, comics are huge, and the new Comic-Con Museum should have had widespread appeal to an international audience. Federal Hall was built for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition. It is located right the San Diego Air and Space Museum and the San Diego Automotive Museum. This means it will be a great opportunity to see car, airplanes, rockets, space craft and comics in one convenient location.
Currently the museum is under development. However, the entrance is open and there is a café and a room with some free exhibits to wet people’s appetites for the future museum. The first free exhibit is Cover Story: The Art of Comic-Con 50.
Cover Story is a small exhibit that can be seen in less than half an hour. When we were there several people were dressed in superhero costumes. We were not quite sure if they were visitors or part of the exhibit. The Cover Story exhibit will run until August 2019.
The San Diego Comic-Con Museum will also hold some special events while the building is being developed. For example, at the end of April 2019, the online video game Everquest had a special event to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Everquest was developed in San Diego.
On July 17, 2019 the Comic-Con Museum will hold a fundraiser to induct Batman into its Comic-Con Museum’s Character Hall of Fame. This will be the 80th birthday for the superhero and Batman is the first inductee. Comic-Con starts on July 18.
UPDATE: We attended the special Batman Pop-Up exhibit during Comic-Con 2019.
UPDATE DECEMBER 2020: Pac-Man will be inducted into the Comic-Con Hall of Fame as its second inductee.
The best way to keep up with events is via the official website or follow the Comic-Con Museum’s Facebook page. The museum is not scheduled to open until 2021. However, it looks like there will be a lot to do in the meantime.
Fun Diego Family looks forward to following the development of this major new San Diego attraction.
