Quivira Basin is where Mission Bay meets the Pacific Ocean. The basin is the entry and exit point for ships going out to sea.
Quivira Basin is sheltered from the rest of Mission Bay by a narrow entrance with Quivira Point at the north and Hospitality Point at the south.
The basin area is essentially a square/trapezoid body of water designed for docking boats. This area is all about boat rentals and tours. Whale watching and fishing tours leave from Quivira Basin.
Hospitality Point does have some grassy picnic areas, but the remote location and lack of water access means it is not very popular. This area is mainly known as a fishing spot. The Mission Bay Park Headquarters is located at the end of the point.
It is possible to walk out on Quivira Jetty to see where the Mission Bay entrance channel and the San Diego River enter from the Pacific Ocean.
The area around Quivira Point is dominated by the high-rise Hyatt Regency Resort.
This is the most commercial area of Mission Bay. In addition to dining at the Hyatt, there are several actual restaurants including the longstanding Sportsmen Seafood which claims to have the best fish and chips in town.
