San Diego’s Best Coffee Bird Rock Coffee Roasters
When I first moved to California in 1991, I lived neat the Bird Rock district of La Jolla. For California, this area has actually not changed too much over the years. However, one major addition has been Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has gained worldwide fame and is now expanding in multiple San Diego locations.

Bird Rock Coffee Roasters was established in 2002 by Chuck Patton. Originally, the coffee was sold at farmer’s markets around the area. They opened the main Bird Rock location in 2006. Fun Diego Family has been going here since 2008. Since 2016, our daughter (born in 2004) has been one of the biggest fans.
Patton travels all over the world looking for the best coffee, and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has a wide range of selections. At the Bird Rock location, you can see all the places Patton and others have traveled to.
This dedication has clearly paid off. In the past decade, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has won all kinds of awards for their coffee. In 2012, Roaster magazine named Bird Rock Coffee Roasters Micro Roaster of the year. The coffee has won Good Food Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2019. Several lists have named Bird Rock Coffee Roasters as one of the best coffee houses in the country.
In early 2017, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters was acquired by PT’s Coffee Roasting Co from Kansas. The company has begun a rapid expansion and now has locations in Little Italy, Moreno, Pacific Beach and Del Mar. We still mainly frequent the original location, but the other locations seem to have the same quality.
One thing we like about the Bird Rock location is it is not only near the ocean, but it is right off the La Jolla Bike Path. We love to take a bike ride and stop for coffee.
The central Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is also unique in that it also functions as a small art gallery. Several years ago, Patton started a fundraiser where local art was auctioned. The response was overwhelming, so he set up a permanent section of the store to display a rotating gallery of local artists.
Bird Rock Coffee Roasters has some very exclusive coffee. They sometimes will have coffee that is $11 a cup. We tend to stick more with the basics. They usually have a very interesting selection of coffees by the cup at a wide range of prices.
My daughter is taking the lead at exploring San Diego’s coffee scene. I look forward to trying new places with her. However, Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is her first love and I am sure we will be coming back many times.
