San Diego’s Best Pizza: Caffe Calabria
Fun Diego Family is on a quest to find the best pizza places in San Diego. One place many people told us to visit was Caffe Calabria in North Park. After a couple of visits, we can say Caffe Calabria has soared near the top of our favorite Neapolitan pizza places in San Diego.

We divide pizza places into four categories. Caffe Calabria falls firmly into the Fancy Italian/California pizza category. These are places that specialize in individual pizzas priced in the $10 to $20 range. Like many of these places, Caffe Calabria has a custom wood-burning pizza oven.
Caffe Calabria serves a fancy pizza but it is a casual place. This is primarily a coffee shop that serves pizza on the side. The coffee equipment in the back room is impressive and this a great place to hang out.
The central North Park location puts Caffe Calabria in with some stiff competition. Some of our favorite places are in this neighborhood, including Urbn, Sicilian Thing and Pizzeria Luigi (and that is just for pizza). We can say Calabria more than holds its own. To our coffee loving teenage daughter, this is now probably her favorite spot in San Diego.
A basic margherita pizza is $12 (add $3 for buffalo mozzarella). Specialty pizzas like prosciutto, diavola (pepperoni) and salsiccia (fennel sausage) are only $13. From 11-3 on Wednesday to Friday all pizzas are $5 off.
It should be noted that Caffe Calabria only serves pizza Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 10 pm. In the mornings, and on Monday and Tuesday, the focus is on coffee. In addition to coffee, Calabria has a full bar.
The pizzas are standard Neapolitan style cooked quickly in a wood-burning oven. They are served uncut with a pair of scissors. My left-handed daughter’s one complaint was they had right-handed scissors’. Despite that oversight, Caffe Calabria has soared to the top of her go-to-list.
We admit we have not tried Calabria as many times as some of our other top places. However, we feel highly comfortable recommending it as one of San Diego’s best Neapolitan pizza places.
The pizza is excellent and reasonably priced. The atmosphere is great for all ages. There are tables inside and on the outdoor patio, or you can sit at the bar. The back room even has a ping pong table.
We had heard many good things about Caffe Calabria. However, the trend has been to overrate Neapolitan pizza. Caffe Calabria far exceeded our expectations. In a neighborhood full of great places, Calabria is near the top.
