San Diego’s Best Pizza: Hoboken Pizza Review
In Fun Diego Family’s quest for the best pizza in San Diego Hoboken Pizza is somewhat of a sleeper. From the outside, this small place on the east end of Pacific Beach looks like a dive bar. However, having been coming here for over 10 years I can say they make some great NY-style pizza. This is our Hoboken Pizza Review.

Hoboken, NJ is located across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It is perhaps best known as the childhood home of Frank Sinatra. The walls are decorated with Sinatra memorabilia, including his mugshot for his arrest in the 1930s (he was arrested for seducing a married woman). There are also nods to famed jersey rock star Bruce Springsteen.
Someone pointed out that the pictures of Sinatra and Springsteen are on the east wall. The west wall is decorated with surf and beach memorabilia and photos. That is a pretty clever representation of East/West. The walls are also papered with hundreds of dollar bills.
UPDATE MAY 2020: Hoboken Pizza made the news when it donated all the money on its walls to charity. The total was over $4,000!
However, in the end, Hoboken Pizza definitely has a dive bar feel. This is a dark place with black booths and picnic tables in the center. Beer is the beverage of choice and it can get rowdy later in the evening. On most days, Hoboken Pizza is open until 2 in the morning (sometimes 2:30 on weekends).
We have always gone during the day or early in the evening so we have not seen the rowdy side. If look at reviews online it appears many people seem to complain about the late-night service. Personally, we have never had an issue and the service has always been solid.
Hoboken Pizza of course has NY-style thin crust pizza. They also have a full range of pastas and sandwiches. We have tried both pizza by the slice and full pizzas and both have been excellent. This place, along with Bronx Pizza, was where I first go my 2-year old daughter into thin crust pizza back in 2006/2007.
The pizza by the slice choices tend to be limited to a handful of selections at any given time. Of course, this means the pizza is likely to be fresher. Hoboken Pizza also does a thick crust Sicilian-style pizza. I have never tried this because when I want this type of pizza I will go a mile down the road to Square Pizza Co.
The price for 2 slices and a soda is $7.75. Substitute a beer for the soda for $9.50 to $12 depending on the beer. Slices are served until 11 pm. This is a fairly standard price for the area.
Full pizzas come in two sizes, 16-inch or 20-inch. The 16-inch is $15.50 for cheese with toppings $2.50 each. The 20-inch is $17.50 and toppings are $3. They run a special where you buy a 16-inch pizza you get a second pizza for half price.
Overall, Hoboken Pizza is a great NY-style pizza place. We don’t get here as much as I like because a few doors down is World Curry, this is my now teenage daughter’s favorite restaurant. However, Italian subs are a new obsession with her. I got her to try they Hoboken Pizza sub and she was a big fan. So hopefully we will be here on a more regular basis.
Fun Diego Family is on a quest to find San Diego’s best pizza in four different categories. Hoboken Pizza is a contender in the NY-style/thin crust category (my personal favorite.
