AleSmith opened in 1995 in a small location in Miramar.  In 2015, the opened a much bigger location down the road.  This new location is now a prime destination stop for beer lovers. The AleSmith brewery can almost be considered a tourist attraction with tours, a baseball museum and a gift shop.

The AleSmith location features a huge, 2-story tasting room with multiple bars.  There is also an outdoor patio area that is very friendly.  AleSmith does not serve food, but there is almost a food truck or two outside.

Part of what makes AleSmith fun is its connection to local San Diego.  The brewery is host to the Tony Gwynn Museum.  This free museum has all kinds of memorabilia from Tony Gwynn’s career (no pictures allowed).

The AleSmith .394 Pale Ale was made in conjunction with Tony Gwynn right before he passed away.  The .394 refers to Tony Gwynn’s 1994 batting average, the highest since San Diego Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941.

In 2017, the members of the rock band Sublime hired AleSmith to produce a beer to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its debut album 40 oz to Freedom.  Sublime was from Long Beach, CA but some of its members currently reside in San Diego.

Probably the most famous AleSmith beer is the Speedway Stout.  Speedway Stout is  Russian Imperial Stout.  With a 12% alcohol volume it is not for the faint of heart.  However, it is one of the most award winning beers of all time.  Currently it sits at #9 on the RateBeer list.

Overall, AleSmith is one of the top small brewing companies in San Diego.  That is saying a great deal as San Diego is widely seen as the top craft brewery city in the country.  Miramar is off-the-beaten tourist track.  However, right down the street is the acclaimed Ballast Point Brewery.  For beer lovers this industrial section is one of San Diego’s top attractions.

We admit we are not true craft beer experts.  We defer to sites like Craft Beer in San Diego when it comes to what beers to pick.  Check out their review of AleSmith for a more detailed beer guide.

AleSmith hosts all kinds of events such as Trivia Nights, as well as special tastings.  Make sure to check out their calendar to see what is going on.
