San Diego’s Best Pizza: Isola Pizza Bar

Fun Diego Family is on a quest to find the best pizza places in San Diego.  One category that is hard to review is what we call Fancy Italian/California pizza.  This is the high-end pizza cooked in special ovens, often from Italy.  One of the best places for this type of pizza is Isola Pizza Bar.

Isola Pizza Bar has two locations, the original in Little Italy and one in La Jolla Village on Girard Ave.  We have been going primarily to the La Jolla location since it opened.  Little Italy has many new restaurants we still need to try.  In La Jolla, Isola Pizza Bar stands out as a unique gem.

Isola Pizza Bar specializes in Neapolitan pizza much as you would find in Italy.  The pizza is quickly cooked in a 900-degree wood burning oven.  Of course, since the original Isola opened it seems almost every Italian restaurant in San Diego now has a pizza oven.  However, Isola Pizza Bar remains one of the best.

Pizzas at Isola start at $12 for margherita and go up to $18 for their four-meat pizza (quattro carni).  Most pizzas are $15.  This is par for the course for this type of pizza.

We started coming to Isola Pizza Bar for their happy hour.  From 3 to 6 every day a margherita pizza is $6.  What makes happy hour particularly attractive is they have a selection of many different items from $5-6.  This includes lamb skewers, olives, shrimp, calamari, polenta and more.

One issue we have with Neapolitan pizza places is we often like other menu items more than the pizza.  In fact, until we started reviewing San Diego pizza, we had only been to Isola for the happy hour.  It was perfect for our craving for sampling different food.

We have now sampled quite a few regularly priced pizzas at Isola and can say we are impressed.  We are also a big fan of their panini sandwiches.  When we checked in with Yelp, we even got a free tiramisu for dessert.

The competition for Neapolitan pizza in San Diego is fierce.  However, Isola Pizza Bar stands out for its happy hour specials served in a low-key atmosphere.  This is simply a hard deal to beat.
