San Diego’s Best Pizza: Pizza e Birra
We only discovered Pizza e Birra in 2019. However, after multiple visits it has soared near the top of our favorite pizza places in San Diego.
Pizza e Birra is located on India Street in a mini-Restaurant Row area. This area is one of the closest to the San Diego airport and is a short distance from where visitors’ pickup rental cars. This makes it a perfect stop before or after a flight.

The pizza served at Pizza e Birra is wood fired. In our pizza taxonomy, this falls into the third category of fancy pizza. However, this is a low-key place that is definitely family friendly. The prices are also more wallet friendly than most places in this category.
Like most wood-fired pizza places, pizza is only one of many options. The menu includes pastas, sandwiches, salads and the always popular chicken wings. Of course, birra is Italian for beer, and there are plenty of wine and beer options. This includes draft beer from leading San Diego breweries such as Ballast Point, Stone and Ale Smith.
The pizza at Pizza e Birra is really good. It is right up with the top wood fired pizza places in San Diego. However, what keeps us coming back are the reasonable prices and friendly service. A large 16-inch specialty pizza is only $20. These pizzas can serve 3 to 4. Most wood fired pizza places charge $15 to $20 for an individual pizza.
We have also learned to go for the specials. Sunday is all day happy hour pricing. During happy hour pizza you can get any small 12-inch pizza for $11. Lunch specials include an individual pizza or pasta and salad for $10.
Our children are teenagers, so we don’t get to take advantage of the kids’ menu. However, kids get to build their own pizza and on Wednesday’s kids eat free. Build your own pizza was always a huge hit when our kids were younger.
Fun Diego Family is on a quest to find the best pizza places in San Diego. Pizza e Birra is in the fancy pizza category. This category has become really overcrowded in recent years, but Pizza e Birra really stood out. We only wish we had discovered it sooner.
Unlike most places serving wood fired pizza, Pizza e Birra is low-key and non-pretentious. The owner often comes out to talk to customers or bring a complimentary cannoli desert. The reality is that there are many good wood fired pizzas in San Diego so service, price and atmosphere are what makes places stand out. Pizza e Birra is a winner on all counts.
