The Spot in La Jolla

San Diego’s Best Pizza: The Spot in La Jolla Review

Share

The Spot has been a La Jolla Village institution since the 1970s.  However, many people might not realize this restaurant actually started in Chicago.  The Spot in La Jolla not only has some of the best deep-dish pizza in San Diego, they can claim to be an actual Chicago pizza.

Pizza is only one of many things served at The Spot.  I had their deep-dish on my first visit in 1991 but have also sampled many of their other items.  This is a great family-friendly place with something for everyone.  Prices are also reasonable given that it has a prime location on Prospect St above the La Jolla Cove.

The Spot is located in an historic building that has served as a restaurant since 1915.  It opened as The Spot in 1978 when the owner moved his restaurant of the same name in Chicago to La Jolla.

The Spot serves both Chicago deep-dish and Chicago thin crust.  I am not a big fan of Chicago thin crust, but I admit I have never tried The Spot’s version.  However, the deep-dish is some of my favorite.  It comes in 2 sizes, an 8 inch for $11.25 or 12-inch for $16.75.  Considering a 12-inch can serve 3 to 4 people this is a bargain.  Up the road at Regent’s Pizza a 14-inch deep-dish goes for $29.

This is a small size because I was the only having pizza that night

In the Fun Diego Family, pizza taxonomy, Chicago deep dish falls into the thick crust category.  There are actually two styles of deep dish, regular and stuffed.  With stuffed pizza, the toppings and cheese are placed inside the crust and then topped with a second crust, pizza sauce, and in some cases more toppings.  This is a much thicker style of pizza than even regular deep dish.  This is the style The Spot serves.

I am not sure why The Spot does not get more recognition for its deep dish.  To me it is one of the best I have had.  One big advantage is it is not as heavy as many places.  I can actually eat more than one slice without feeling like my stomach will explode.

The Spot also has the advantage of being a great sports bar.  At happy hour drinks are $5 and appetizers are $3 off.  La Jolla has many fancy restaurants and The Spot is a breath of fresh air in a very touristy area.  If you want to build up an appetite you can go on our La Jolla walk or come here after spending a day at La Jolla Cove.

Fun Diego Family is on a quest to find San Diego’s best pizza in four different categories.  Right now The Spot is near the top in the thick crust/deep dish category.
