Top 10 San Diego Pizza 2019
Fun Diego Family has been on a two year+ quest for the best pizza in San Diego. For the end of 2019 we thought we would look at the places we visited the most throughout the year. We think the fact that we go back to these places on a regular basis speaks volumes. This is our top 10 San Diego Pizza Places of 2019

Overview
We divide pizza into 4 broad styles:
- New York style/thin crust
- Deep dish/thick crust
- Fancy Italian/California pizza
- Good old America pizza parlor
In assessing the places we visited as a family in 2019, we hit a variety of styles. The big exception is NY-style thin crust pizza. A regular lunch for our family is a 2 slice and soda special at NY-style places. For this list, we only included places where we ordered a full pizza.
This list is not necessarily the list of best pizza in San Diego. It is just the places we visited the most in 2019. In many cases, it was a matter of convenience. It will be interesting to see how this list changes for 2020.

1. Urbn Pizza
New Haven, CT style pizza is a family favorite, even though we rarely get to New Haven. Urbn Pizza specializes in this style and has become our favorite pizza spot. My son declared it his absolute favorite. During 2019 we went to North Park, Encinitas and the Vista location after visiting the Wave Waterpark. However, our favorite location is now in El Cajon.
2. Pizzeria Luigi
We went to all three Pizzeria Luigi locations in 2019. This included a Father’s Day visit to Imperial Beach. Most of our visits are to the North Park location. This is where we order whole pies for takeout. We even served the spicy El Diablo pizza at a party!
3. Pizza e Birra
We just discovered Pizza e Birra and 2019 and it has soared to the top of our list. They specialize in wood-fired pizza. This would normally fall into our fancy pizza category. However, Pizza e Birra is a down-to-earth spot. Unlike many wood-fired pizza spots, prices are reasonable.
4. Caffe Calabria
Caffe Calabria has become one of our favorite spots for wood-fired pizza. It is also a coffee shop and bar. If my daughter had her way, she would be here all the time. However, like most individual wood-fired pizza, the cost will be about double ordering traditional pizza. This becomes more of a special treat.
5. Lefty’s Chicago Pizzeria
Lefty’s has been a family favorite for years. There large menu means we can find something for everyone. Most of the time we get a slice of deep dish or thin crust. About once a year we order a stuffed pizza for takeout. This enough to feed 8 people for under $40. All our visits have been to the larger Mission Hills location. However, we have been going here back when there was just the smaller North Park shop.
6. Sicilian Thing Pizza
We ordered takeout from Sicilian Thing multiple times throughout 2019. We order two pizzas, thin crust and Sicilian style. The restaurant changed ownership at the end of the year so we will revisit in 2020 to make sure it is still up to snuff.
7. Pietro’s Cucina Italiana
A style of pizza our family loves can be found at classic Italian restaurants. The most notable example would be Filippis. However, our new favorite is Pietros in La Mesa. We discovered this place in July 2019 and have already been 4 times. We still need to do a full review.
8. Ambrogio15
This is my daughter’s favorite pizza. We all love the Pacific Beach location but most of our visits are now to the Little Italy Food Hall. This is a fairly expensive indulgence. My daughter gobbles down the $18 Burrata e Prosciutto Pizza as a special treat.
9. Tony Pepperoni
Tony Pepperoni is classic pizza parlor style pizza. We have become regulars at the Carmel Mountain Ranch location. This is pizza for the masses, not the pizza snobs. However, the conveyor belts crank out an excellent pizza.
10. Coney Island Pizzeria
We used to eat here all the time when my daughter took piano lessons in Poway. Unfortunately, she quit lessons in mid-2019 and it is out of the way for us. However, the plan is to come here at least 3 times in 2020. We will do it!
Honorable Mention: Square Pizza Co
Square Pizza in Pacific Beach is a favorite that we do not get to as much as we would like. Also we usually get pizza by the slice and have never ordered a whole pizza. However, they offer frozen takeout pizza by the slice. We always have some in our freezer. It makes for a great lunch or late-night snack.
